James P. Patterson follows the Ninth Legion from its early campaigns through the Roman conquest of Britain, the Boudican revolt, warfare in northern Britain, and its final secure presence at Eboracum, modern York. From there, the investigation tests the major theories surrounding one of the Roman Empire's most enduring historical mysteries.
Did the Ninth Legion suffer catastrophic losses in Roman Britain during the military crisis of Hadrian's reign? What does the evidence discovered at Nijmegen actually prove? Could Legio IX Hispana have been transferred east and destroyed during the Bar Kokhba revolt? Did it survive even longer before disappearing during Rome's wars with Parthia?
