In a medieval valley isolated by stone walls and lore for some two hundred years, Lord Matheu Vaillancourt, heir to an old influence, searches for answers in smuggled manuscripts and hidden art, but when he finds Elisabetta Caselli and her infant taking refuge below his castle, the rules that raised him meet the instincts that define him.
Alongside Claria Fontaine, whose tavern shelters a secret network, and Aélis Proviseur, the châtelaine who tends the castle's hearth, Matheu must weigh livelihoods, loyalties and the safety of the valley's townsfolk against a community's future. As Baron Peiro Ratier tightens his grip-driven by vengeance and political hunger-the town's old myths crack, and a new image begins to be painted: one in which families decide their fates.
