They develop a close relationship, with J.C. affectionately calling Mr. Higgins Uncle Hula Hoop. Uncle Hula Hoop has health complications due to exposure to Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. He has COPD and Parkinson's Disease. He uses a wheelchair to get about. A devout Christian, he witnesses to J.C. about Jesus, with J.C. eventually turning his life over to Jesus at the end of the book.
