Danny Reyes is four minutes from a train he's been waiting for too long, on a platform too cold, at the end of a day that asked more than it gave. He wakes up on the floor of a forty-story Manhattan loft, staring at a ceiling that has no business existing.
He is not alone. Eight other people are scattered across the hardwood around him - an ER nurse who died when a hospital ceiling came down on her, a retired schoolteacher who had a heart attack and lay undiscovered for over a day, a contractor who fell from scaffolding, a finance executive, a teenage delivery rider, a man who once called himself NYPD. Nine ordinary New Yorkers. Nine ordinary deaths, scattered across five boroughs and one impossible night. And in the center of the room, resting on the floor without any visible means of support, sits a sphere - black, seamless, perfectly still, and somehow the darkest thing in any light that touches it.
It doesn't explain itself. It doesn't need to. Within the hour, it has a use for them.
The sphere calls them service personnel. It calls what comes next missions. It hands them weapons that simply appear, folds the room like a piece of paper being put away, and drops all nine of them onto a sidewalk in a section of the city that has been emptied - every car stopped, every door unlocked, every living soul somehow removed, leaving only the hum of a vending machine and the flicker of a hallway light. Their target is behind an apartment door. It looks like an old man in a bathrobe. It is not an old man, and within seconds of opening that door, it stops bothering to pretend.
Survive, and there's a scoreboard. Every decision counts - who you protect, who you leave exposed, how you perform under fire - and the sphere is always watching, always recalculating, always keeping score. Frank Kowalski, a former cop who has clearly done this before, starts building a circle of people he trusts and quietly deciding who's worth covering and who isn't. Aaliyah Brooks, eleven years an ER nurse, stops asking why this is happening and starts triaging who's going to make it through the next hour. Tommy Greco discovers that holding a weapon is the only time he knows exactly where he is - and asks Danny to watch him, because he's afraid of who he's becoming. Carol Hutchins prays with her gun within reach. And as the missions escalate - through a Red Hook building that's been quietly rigged against them, toward a final target that has had fifty years and an entire international airport to prepare - it becomes clear that something has been organizing itself out there for far longer than any of them have been alive, and that the sphere's second chance was never the point.
