Rafferty Oakes was twelve when his mother handed him a camera she had bought for forty-seven dollars on eBay.
Not as a document, she told him. Not as evidence. Film me like I'm a person you're interested in.
Lynette Oakes was four months into an illness her family would only name sideways, and she knew exactly what she was asking for. She wanted her son to keep the real thing - not the version he would assemble later out of what he wished he had noticed. She wanted the ordinary Tuesday. The bad joke. The face she made at the lens without meaning to.
She died in January.
That spring, Rafferty screened what he had made at a middle school showcase, in front of four hundred people. It ended on forty-seven seconds of yellow light beneath a closed bedroom door - the door he had been sitting outside of on the night she died, in a hallway his father believed was empty. When the lights came up, his father stood, gathered his coat, and walked out the side exit without once looking toward the back of the room.
They did not talk about the film for three years.
A BOY WHO FILMS EVERYTHING EXCEPT HIMSELF
At fifteen, Rafferty shoots bus windows. Alley light in four seasons. A dog outside a coffee shop who came every Saturday morning for a month and then didn't. Nothing personal - a rule he never said out loud, which hardened into the kind of person he is.
Then Zephyrine Cadell walks into the media arts room with a phone full of timestamped notes.
She has watched his film four times. She has opinions about the November edit, where he stopped trusting the image and started telling the audience how to feel.
And she is dying. She says it plainly, both hands flat on the table, refusing every piece of the careful sideways language he grew up inside.
She wants him to make the film.
She comes back the next day with terms typed on folded paper. Total access - her apartment, her school day, her friends. In exchange: veto power over hospital footage, over any frame that makes her a sick person rather than a person who is sick, and over the ending.
He tells her she can't have veto over the ending. She tells him she absolutely can.
WHAT IT COSTS TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT SOMEONE
Over one Chicago winter - a single-screen theater on Milwaukee Avenue, a rooftop in November, a park bench where the bare trees are waiting out February - Rafferty learns what his mother was actually asking of him at twelve. Not how to film. How to look, and how to stay looking when the honest choice is the one that will hurt someone he loves.
His father is still careful around lenses. And the girl in the too-large jacket is running out of the one thing she cannot negotiate for.
The film he makes will be the second one that costs him something. He already knows what the first one cost.
A literary young adult novel about grief, art, and the ethics of paying attention - a coming of age story that treats a teenager's work as serious work, and a book about death that is mostly about being alive. A father and a son surviving the loss of a mother. A friendship built on total honesty and typed lists of terms. A boy learning that the camera can be a choice instead of a compulsion.
For anyone who has ever kept a photograph of someone because it was the one where they looked like themselves.
She asked him to remember what she was actually like. Not what he would think she was like. There is a difference.
