The purpose of this workbook is to guide you, as parents of a child with special needs, as you address the many concerns and needs of your child as he or she develops. This is the first of a series of publications that will assist you in seeking the appropriate services that your child needs to develop to the maximum extent possible.

Parents are a vital part of the team of professionals who work collaboratively to benefit the child. The other members of the team may vary from child to child, but each team should be led by the family and supported by the professionals who have specific areas of expertise. Remember that you know your child better than anyone else. Be ready to share the information that promotes the implementation of the appropriate combination of services to help your child progress.

In this workbook, we begin at the beginning, covering the ages of birth through age five when your child begins school. We walk you step-by-step through the various stages of development and help you as you navigate various services available to your child, as well as your role as their advocate.

You are encouraged to make your own notes regarding the different sections. Taking the opportunity to write down your questions helps you remember and discuss any issues you might have and provides you with time to reflect on your next, best move. Share this material with your spouse or partner and any other caregivers (including your pediatrician) so that you can provide a complete picture of your child's development.
