Tilapia is a common name used for several species of cichlid fish native mainly to Africa and the Middle East. Historically, these fish were found in rivers, lakes, and shallow water bodies where temperatures were relatively warm. Ancient records, including Egyptian art, depict fish that resemble Nile tilapia, showing that humans have interacted with these species for thousands of years as a food source. Their early domestication, or at least early semi-culture, was possible because they adapted well to small water bodies and could breed readily in captivity.
