The ostrich belongs to the class Aves, order Struthioniformes, and family Struthionidae. It is the only extant member of its family, making it taxonomically unique. Its scientific name is Struthio camelus, literally meaning camel bird, a reference to its long neck, legs, and desert endurance. Ostriches share ancestry with other flightless ratites such as emus, rheas, cassowaries, and kiwis. Among these, the ostrich is the largest and fastest on land, capable of running speeds exceeding 65-70 kilometers per hour.
Subspecies and domesticated forms
There are several recognized subspecies, though interbreeding in captivity has blurred their boundaries:

- Red-Necked Ostrich (S. c. camelus) - Found across North and East Africa, this subspecies is tall and robust with a vivid red to pink hue on the neck and thighs, particularly in breeding males. It adapts well to arid, hot climates but is more aggressive and harder to manage in captivity.
- Blue-Necked Ostrich (S. c. australis) - Native to southern Africa, characterized by a bluish-grey neck and somewhat calmer temperament. It thrives in semi-arid savannas and is considered the most balanced in terms of productivity and manageability.
- African Black Ostrich (S. c. domesticus) - A domesticated hybrid developed in South Africa by crossbreeding the Red-Necked and Blue-Necked varieties. Selective breeding for docility, early maturity, and quality plumage produced the African Black, the standard stock for commercial farming worldwide.
