Moore was reared in Bethel, Connecticut, after being born in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1958. His early passion for punk and the avant-garde served as the basis for his later inventions. After relocating to New York City in the late 1970s, he became fully involved in the no-wave movement and took in the raw energy of groups like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and DNA. He met Kim Gordon in this electrifying environment, and the two of them went on to establish Sonic Youth, a band that would transform rock music.

By fusing melody, discord, and noise in a way that went against accepted norms, Moore helped create Sonic Youth and paved the way for alternative music. For a generation looking for unadulterated, creative, and uncompromising music, albums like Daydream Nation, Goo, and Dirty became landmarks. However, Moore's impact extended beyond Sonic Youth. He has worked with performers from a variety of musical genres throughout the course of his career, including jazz greats like Nels Cline, Merzbow, Yoko Ono, and Glenn Branca.
