The fall of Benito Mussolini in July 1943 did not mean the end of the war in Italy. On the contrary, one of the most dramatic phases in the country's modern history began.
After the armistice with the Allies, the previous order collapsed. German troops occupied large parts of central and northern Italy, Mussolini returned to the head of the Italian Social Republic and in the south the kingdom now fought on the side of the Western Allies. At the same time, a growing resistance movement emerged. Italy became the scene of a bitter campaign and at the same time a civil war.
