The Mahdi uprising in Sudan is one of the most dramatic conflicts of the late 19th century. What began in 1881 as a religious and political uprising against Egyptian rule developed within a few years into a revolution that destroyed entire armies, brought down Khartoum and gave rise to an independent Mahdist state.
This book tells the story of the uprising from its political, social and religious prerequisites to the Anglo-Egyptian reconquest of Sudan. The focus is on Muhammad Ahmad, who declared himself a Mahdi, Charles Gordon and the siege of Khartoum, Khalifa Abdallahi, Osman Digna and finally Horatio Herbert Kitchener with his advance to Omdurman.
This is not just about battles and campaigns. The colonial political interests of Great Britain and Egypt, the importance of Islam for the movement, the internal tensions of the Mahdist state, the war against Ethiopia, the great hunger crises and the international power struggle over the Nile, which ultimately led France and Italy into the events, are also explained in an understandable way.
Why was a movement that was initially poorly armed able able to destroy a rule that had existed for decades? Why did the army of Hiccup Pasha fail so completely? Why was Gordon locked up in Khartoum? How did the Mahdiyya manage to build its own state after the death of its founder? And why did Britain decide to systematically reconquer Sudan more than ten years later?
The book is aimed at history buffs who want to get a comprehensible and well-founded overview of the topic. It is not a special scientific study for historians, but an easily accessible presentation that combines military events with politics, religion, colonialism and social developments.
