Even though it occurred some time ago, Jack is still depressed about having been dumped by Holly. But then he gets a visit from his long-ago former girlfriend Joan, who wants him to help her friend Wendy, who is running for mayor against an opponent who will do anything to stay in power. Jack agrees to help for Joan's sake, a decision that sees him thrust into situations involving, among other things, breaking and entering, a drive-by shooting, a carjacking, an attempted assassination, and involvement in a troubled movie production about zombies. He would be much more worried about it all if not for the fact that he's fallen back in love with Joan, who proves to be a welcome distraction as the two of them reflect on what it was that broke them up in the first place and whether or not they're smart enough in their forties to get it right a second time.
