Pittsburgh's music scene isn't a single entity-it's a collection of distinct subcultures, neighborhoods, and creative communities that coexist within the same city. In Steel City Setlist, musician and writer Maleena Dominick traces the interconnected worlds that make up this vibrant ecosystem. Through autoethnographic reflection, interviews with more than thirty musicians, and a multigenerational look at her own family's history in local music, she offers an inside perspective on how scenes form, fracture, and evolve. From festivals and DIY venues to local openers, benefit shows, and long-standing traditions, Steel City Setlist illustrates how collaboration, conflict, identity, and community shape the lived experiences of Pittsburgh artists. Her account highlights the power of showing up-how the presence, support, and creativity of individual musicians and fans sustain the scene as a whole. Both a personal narrative and a cultural examination, Steel City Setlist is a thoughtful exploration of what it means to make music, belong to a scene, and contribute to a city's artistic legacy.
