Stamford Bridge follows the life of Harald Sigurdsson, later known as Harald Hardrada, from the bloody defeat at Stiklestad to his final campaign in England.
Wounded and driven into exile while still a boy, Harald travels east through the lands of the Rus and enters the service of Prince Yaroslav in Kiev. From there, his road leads south to Constantinople and the Varangian Guard. He fights for the Byzantine Empire, survives the heat and brutality of Sicily, learns the power of gold and court intrigue, and escapes imperial chains with a harder understanding of kingship.
When Harald finally returns to Norway, he must navigate a complicated shared rule with his nephew Magnus, the son of Saint Olaf. After Magnus's death, Harald becomes Norway's sole king and earns the name Hardrada: a ruler of hard counsel, feared judgment, and restless ambition. His long conflict with Denmark teaches him the cost of campaigns that cannot deliver a final victory.
Then England's crown comes within reach.
Encouraged by the exiled Tostig Godwinson, Harald sails west in 1066 to claim a kingdom. His early victories bring York to submission, but Harold Godwinson marches north with unexpected speed. At Stamford Bridge, two formidable kings meet on English soil. The result ends Harald's life and helps reshape the future of England.
Presented in alternating English and German paragraphs, the novel is both a historical narrative and a dual-language reading experience.
