For centuries, the Black Madonna of Częstochowa has stood at the heart of Polish faith and identity.

The Black Madonna of Częstochowa is a dual-language historical novel in English and Polish that follows generations of the fictional Wrona family as their lives intersect with the extraordinary history of Jasna Góra.
Beginning in 1384, when a sacred image arrives at the newly founded Pauline monastery, the story moves through the 1430 raid that damaged the icon and left its famous scars. More than two centuries later, the Wrona descendants experience the catastrophe of the Swedish Deluge, when one of Europe's great military powers invades the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and nearly destroys it. At Jasna Góra, monks, soldiers, townsmen, and ordinary families face the Swedish siege that will become one of the defining legends of Polish resistance.
The generations that follow witness the coronation of the Madonna as Queen of Poland, the partitions that erase Poland from the political map, the great nineteenth-century pilgrimages that help preserve national identity, German occupation during the Second World War, and the struggle between the Catholic Church and Poland's communist government.
The story culminates in 1979, when Pope John Paul II returns to his homeland and kneels at Jasna Góra before the same scarred face that generations of Poles have known.
Carefully separating documented history, religious tradition, and fictional reconstruction, The Black Madonna of Częstochowa is both a sweeping family saga and the story of one of Poland's most enduring national symbols.
