Well-trained staff represent a competitive advantage that should not be underestimated in the face of a constantly changing environment. However, to ensure that continuing professional development delivers the expected benefits, a well-thought-out approach to ensuring the transfer of what has been learnt is essential. This thesis examines how social software can act as a 'coach' to ensure the transfer of learning, thereby supporting the learning and knowledge transfer of staff. The methodology involves analysing the existing literature and applying it to the research question. Based on this literature review, six hypotheses are formulated regarding the ways in which social software can support the transfer of learning. Furthermore, the relevant transfer measures that may be suitable for support through social software are evaluated.
