This is a memoir-style guide for anyone standing at the edge of a career in clinical social work, whether they're just beginning to consider it or already deep inside it and questioning everything. Dr. Stephanie White traces her own path from a childhood in the Bronx, raised by a Colombian mother and an Italian father who treated education as non-negotiable, through a pre-med trajectory with the test scores to back it up, to a single sentence from a college professor that quietly rerouted the next thirteen years of her life.
What follows is an honest account of the field most clinicians don't talk about publicly: the supervised years in private practice, a decade across city- and state-funded mental health centers and inpatient units, teaching in college classrooms, and the particular exhaustion of managed care, where productivity quotas and dysfunctional leadership wear down even the most capable clinicians. Dr. White writes candidly about being underpaid and underappreciated in government and agency settings, about learning to pick her battles, and about the long, deliberate process of building credentials, bridging into a doctorate in clinical psychology, and becoming licensed across twenty-four states, all in pursuit of one outcome: working autonomously, on her own terms.
Part memoir, part field guide, this book doesn't romanticize the profession or warn people away from it. It offers something more useful: a clear-eyed look at what the work actually demands, what the systems around it often fail to give back, and what it looks like to build a sustainable, self-directed career inside a field that can otherwise consume the people who do it well.
