Meanwhile, her sister Bell Dale finds happiness with Dr. Crofts, a kind and steady man, despite the Squire's initial disapproval. The novel explores the consequences of emotional choices, the limits of ambition, and the quiet strength of personal integrity.
Though filled with romantic plotlines, Trollope also offers sharp social commentary and subtle satire of Victorian manners and values.
