Can You Forgive Her? by Anthony Trollope is the first novel in the Palliser series. It explores themes of love, duty, social expectation, and personal choice through the intertwined lives of several women.
The central story follows Alice Vavasor, a young woman torn between two suitors: the ambitious but unstable George Vavasor, her cousin, and the respectable but dull John Grey. Alice struggles with her desire for independence and the expectations placed on her as a Victorian woman, leading her to make impulsive and conflicting decisions about marriage.
Parallel to Alice's story are the experiences of two other women: Lady Glencora Palliser, trapped in a politically convenient marriage to Plantagenet Palliser while still in love with the charming but untrustworthy Burgo Fitzgerald, and Mrs. Greenow, a wealthy widow amusingly balancing two very different suitors.
Trollope uses these women's dilemmas to question society's expectations of women and whether personal happiness can-or should-be sacrificed for propriety. The title, Can You Forgive Her?, challenges the reader to consider whether Alice's wavering and rebellion are forgivable.
It's a rich, psychological, and satirical exploration of Victorian morality and female agency.
