Nineteen-year-old Elise Harper was already there.
In the summer of 2025, Elise and her older sister June wandered into a small Hare Krishna kirtan gathering in Jackson, Michigan. June joked about it. Elise didn't.
She heard something in the chanting that she never completely forgot.
Then June died.
And Elise became something she never wanted to be:
the sister who survived.
Months later, she finds herself returning to Jackson and walking through the doors of The Bhakti House, carrying a private burden nobody there knows about-the final phone call from June that Elise chose not to answer.
What begins as a search for forgiveness becomes something far more complicated.
There is prasadam being prepared downstairs.
Kirtan upstairs.
Japa beads she doesn't quite know what to do with.
A young artist named Theo who has never met June-and therefore sees Elise before he sees her grief.
And a community that keeps asking a question Elise isn't prepared to answer:
What if continuing to live isn't a betrayal of the person who didn't get to?
As Elise begins learning about bhakti yoga, devotional service, Krishna, the Bhagavad-gita, sacred sound, and the difference between remembering someone and building your identity around losing them, she discovers that June left behind more than memories.
She left something in Jackson.
Something she intended to give Elise.
And just when Elise finally begins understanding why she returned, another stranger arrives at The Bhakti House carrying an envelope that should not have been opened yet.
Perhaps some doors don't open because we understand them.
