THE SIGNAL LOG
A Freja Holm Nordic Noir Mystery - The Sk rgård Line - Book 2
When retired lighthouse keeper Aksel Bruun is found dead in his cottage on the island of Holmsted, the cause is uncontested-a heart long failing, a winter that finally caught up with him. For journalist Freja Holm, one year removed from the case that nearly ended her career, the obituary assignment is something new: not a punishment, but a sign of trust.
But Aksel kept more than a lighthouse. In a locked chest at the foot of his bed lies a decades-old signal log-a private record of a Cold War coastal watch that once quietly reported Baltic shipping movements to Danish intelligence. Its entries for one night in October 1978 don't match the story Holmsted has told about itself for forty years.
As Freja pulls the thread, she finds a guild chairman managing an old friend's conscience the same way he once managed a strait full of secrets: patiently, reasonably, without ever raising his voice. She finds a son whose silence looks like guilt and isn't. And she finds, buried in a dead man's final letters, an unanswered question that reaches across sixty years and an entire sea to a family who never stopped wondering what happened to a boat that never came home.
Nothing here is easily prosecutable. No one now living can be made to answer for what happened in the water that autumn. Freja must decide-again, and differently this time-what the truth is worth when it can change everything except the law.
The Signal Log is the second novel in the Sk rgård Line series, following The Weather Log.
