Sam Dunn, a strikingly handsome fifteen-year-old, finds himself alone and homeless after his father's death. With no family left-his mother died giving birth-he views social interactions as exhausting and unnecessary. Living on the streets, he survives on a meager inheritance, feeling isolated and seeking companionship. Meanwhile, Emily Carter, a fourteen-year-old vampire, is on the run. Her maker, Edward, turned her against the vampire code, which forbids turning anyone younger than sixteen. The vampire council executed Edward for his transgression, leaving Emily to escape alone. Without Edward's guidance, Emily struggles to learn the ways of a vampire while evading hunters sent to kill her. She longs for connection and safety. One evening, Emily sees Sam in a park. Sam is captivated by Emily's otherworldly beauty, and the two quickly fall in love, bound by their shared loneliness. Desperate to be together, Emily turns Sam into a vampire. Unaware that turning a human sends a detectable vibration to other vampires, Emily inadvertently alerts the hunters to their location. The hunters catch up to them, leading to a violent confrontation in an abandoned church. Sam and Emily narrowly escape but are left wounded and exhausted. As they flee, Emily recalls a name Edward once mentioned-Ronan-who might be able to help them. Traveling by night and seeking shelter from the hunters, Sam and Emily head to Ronan's last known location, an abandoned warehouse in Oakglen. Ronan, sympathetic to their plight, agrees to help them despite the risk of opposing Lamont Grey, the strict leader of the vampire council who ordered Edward's execution. With Ronan's assistance, Sam and Emily manage to defeat the hunters. Realizing that Lamont's death is their only hope for safety, they plan a bold attack against him. In a daring confrontation, Sam and Emily kill Lamont Grey, throwing the vampire subworld into chaos. With the council's leadership in disarray, Ronan informs them of a place called Haven, rumored to accept all vampires. As a new leader rises and the vampire world teeters on the brink of change, Sam and Emily set their sights on finding Haven, determined to secure their future together.
