Maeve Lacewing is heir to the throne in Shadowland, destined to rule over the entirety of the realm, including the many families of shadow faeries as well as all of the other factions of magical creatures, some of whom get along with and respect the shadow faeries but some of whom would rather see her ruling family fall and send the shadow faeries back into the darkness where they belong. Shadowland is sharply divided between the ruling class of shadow faeries and the lower classes of creatures, and this tension often leads to conflict. But before she can take over the throne, she must first she must go on her Luminescence, a trip all of the shadow faeries take to the human world when they come of age. It's their chance to decide if they want to stay in the human world permanently, and live out their years as a nonmagical mortal, or return to Shadowland and retain their magical powers in a warring and often unsafe land. For Maeve, this trip is symbolic. She must return to ascend the throne. But she's not sure if that's what she wants. She only knows that it's expected of her. If only she could live in both worlds, then things might be a bit easier for her.
