Lecture 27. The Enlightenment: Problems of Knowledge and Metaphysics
Voltaire and Rousseau: Freedom under Judgment. Voltaire puts religious certainty on trial, attacking fanaticism and the cruelty committed in its name. The Lisbon earthquake turns that attack to fury - a city destroyed at prayer, on All Saints' Day, while philosophy went on explaining that this was the best of all possible worlds. Rousseau turns his suspicion on civilization itself. Inequality, dependence, education, the social contract, and the general will converge on a single question: can political society restore the freedom it helped destroy?
Montesquieu, Diderot, Skovoroda: Law, Knowledge, and Inner Freedom. Montesquieu asks how laws arise from the conditions of a society, and how power can be made to check power. Through the Encyclopédie, Diderot makes the circulation of knowledge an act of insubordination against censorship and intellectual obedience. Grigory Skovoroda takes another path entirely, locating freedom in self-knowledge, spiritual independence, and kindred labor - work suited to the person who performs it.
Lecture 28. Ethical and Philosophical Principles of Freemasonry
Freemasonry: When Craft Becomes Moral Philosophy. Freemasonry turns the language of builders inward. The rough ashlar stands for character before cultivation; Solomon's Temple becomes an architecture of moral order; the legend of Hiram puts fidelity, loss, and death in front of the initiate and requires him to act them out. The London Grand Lodge tradition consolidated in 1717 carries these symbols into institutional life, where moral instruction runs through initiation, discipline, and obligations assumed toward other members.
The Lodge: Universal Brotherhood and Its Boundaries. The lodge builds a voluntary order out of freedom of conscience and regulated sociability, with connections that cross political borders. Its history reaches into the revolutionary worlds of America and France. The lecture separates documented networks and political participation from later legends of hidden command, then tests universal brotherhood against the exclusions of eighteenth-century society.
