Ukraine, winter 1997-1998. A midnight knock, rough hands, steel doors, then a cell. There is no formal charge, no trial, not even a criminal case. What begins as imprisonment soon reveals something more: behind the walls, the country has simply shed its respectable clothes.
The prison has its own laws, and they have little to do with the law written in books. Truth depends on who has the power to impose it, fear keeps people obedient, and corruption reaches places where justice does not. Informants appear among cellmates, interrogations continue until resistance weakens, and humiliation becomes part of everyday life. In an overcrowded cell, dozens of men breathe the same stale air, compete for bunks, share a filthy toilet, and live with dampness and tuberculosis spreading through spaces that were never meant to hold so many people.
Beyond the walls, the same country presents itself through courts, ministries, prosecutors, official seals, and carefully written procedures. Prison removes that façade. There, the distance between law and force almost disappears, and a person discovers how quickly legal language becomes meaningless when those who enforce it are answerable only to themselves.
Survival under such conditions requires more than endurance. The first task is to understand the people around you before they understand how to use you. Manipulation has to be recognized before it closes around you. At the same time, the body must be kept functioning and the mind kept clear.
This book was written inside that reality, while the doors were still locked and the next interrogation could begin at any moment. The notes gradually became a practical prison survival guide-an attempt to survive the physical conditions and psychological pressure without allowing prison to reshape who you are.
But the cell reveals more than prison life. Once ordinary protections are removed, the mechanisms that govern people become easier to see. Authority no longer needs to pretend that it is fair, fear no longer needs to hide behind polite language, and human character is exposed with a clarity rarely possible outside.
The cell is a small model of a much larger prison.
Inside, the bars are made of steel. Outside, they are called law.
