For everyone who has ever walked away from a room thinking, Nobody believes me. Nobody understands me.
You have tried the programs. You have sat in the circles. You have been told to surrender, to stay humble, to find a higher power, and to admit you are powerless. Maybe some of it helped. Maybe none of it fit. Maybe you left every room feeling like the belonging they were offering required you to be someone else first.
This book was built for you.
Piscatory Recovery is a peer-facilitated recovery program that uses fishing and the making of fishing lures as its vehicle. It runs on one philosophical engine: radical self-love and personal agency. Not powerlessness. Not surrender. The reclamation of your own capacity to know yourself, trust yourself, and solve your own problems.
The program is in this book. You can enact it alone. The hitch - and there is always a hitch - is that it works better in community. The community was already there. This book helps you see it.
You are not broken. You are not starting over. You are seasoned material. You have already been working for years. You are ready for a new purpose.
The Homecoming is a 13-week peer-support curriculum built around two parallel tracks: a weekly Study Circle working through thirteen tenets of recovery and the hands-on build of a Broomstick Popper fishing lure-a lure made from a discarded broom handle, seven steps, start to finish. By week thirteen, you hold a completed lure and thirteen weeks of honest work. Both go to the water.
William Billy Banick is AUDHD, in recovery, and the founder of the Piscatory Recovery Program. He built this framework for himself and is now offering it to you. He fishes Long Island Sound. He makes lures from discarded broom handles. He sat alone in a truck in a parking lot at night for a long time before he understood that the community was already there.
Finally.
