Mandarin Chinese, which is called Pǔtōnghuà in China, is the language that is spoken by more people than any other language on Earth. Not only does Singapore recognize it as an official language, but so do China and Taiwan. Its long and illustrious history spans more than three thousand years, making it a member of the Sino-Tibetan language family.

- Tonal Language: Mandarin has four main tones (with a neutral tone), meaning that the pitch or intonation of a word can change its meaning. For example, the word ma can mean mother, horse, hemp, or scold, depending on the tone used.
- Characters: Unlike most languages that use alphabets, Mandarin uses Chinese characters, each of which represents a syllable or a word. These characters can be complex and require memorization, though they can convey a great deal of meaning in just a single symbol.
- Grammar: Mandarin Chinese has a relatively simple grammar system compared to many European languages. It doesn't use conjugations for verbs, and word order (Subject-Verb-Object) plays a crucial role in understanding the meaning of sentences. For example, I eat apple in Mandarin would be Wǒ chī pÃngguǒ (我吃苹果).
- Pinyin: Pinyin is the Romanization system for transcribing Chinese characters into the Latin alphabet. It helps learners with pronunciation. For instance, the word 北京 (Beijing) is written as Běijīng in Pinyin.
