The official language of Lithuania, which is also one of the oldest languages in Europe, is Lithuanian (lietuvių kalba). Unlike Slavic and Germanic languages, it is a member of the Baltic language family and is closely linked to Latvian. One reason Lithuanian is useful for linguistic studies is because it has preserved numerous archaic traits of Proto-Indo-European.
