The 2025 water quality survey in Burkina Faso reveals significant disparities among the various water bodies. Groundwater generally meets drinking water standards, despite exceedances observed for barium, iron, and nitrites. In contrast, surface water shows marked degradation characterized by high turbidity, elevated phosphate levels, and low dissolved oxygen, reflecting organic pollution and eutrophication. Effluent discharges are the primary source of pollution, with high levels of non-compliance related in particular to turbidity, sodium, barium, and hypoxia. These results underscore the need to strengthen wastewater treatment systems, discharge controls, and environmental monitoring to ensure sustainable water resource management.
