Early in the twentieth century a printed rate card circulated among the opera houses of Italy, a price list from a claque, one of the applause brigades that had worked the great theaters of Europe for a hundred years and the law courts of Rome two thousand years before. Approval came in grades, the grades came at prices, and a wild ovation cost extra. A century later a company in West Palm Beach sold the same product from a pull-down menu, five hundred admirers for ten dollars, more than two hundred million sold before a newspaper investigation took it apart in 2018. The invoice was older than the empire that first printed it.
Applause is information. Before the poll and the ballot, the sound of a crowd was the only instrument that could report, in public and at scale, how many people approved and how strongly they felt. That report moves us more reliably than our own judgment, and we obey it even when we suspect it is staged. To forge the report is to forge the public mind, and The Rented Crowd is the history of the people who learned to do exactly that.
Across twenty centuries and four technologies, David Boles follows the trade through four costumes. The first is the rented hand: Nero's corps of paid applauders and the professional claques of Paris, where a chef de claque studied a score and sold approval by the grade. Next comes the conscripted hand: the state ovation, the manufactured roar of the acclamation regimes, the applause a citizen could be punished for refusing to give. After it, the recorded hand: the canned laughter of television, the payola of the record business, the forged sales chart, the piped crowd noise of the stadium. Last is the counted hand: the follower factory, the five-star review bought for a few cents, the server racks that applaud by the million with no palm involved.
The fraud works because human beings read a room before they trust themselves, and the laboratory has measured the reflex with uncomfortable precision. For most of history only princes and impresarios could afford to counterfeit acclaim, so the rest of the world could treat it as roughly honest. Cheap forgery ended that arrangement, and it handed the work of detection to everyone. A citizen of the counted era audits a thousand roars a day with no price list posted and no gallery to watch.
To meet that job, the book restores two instruments the old audiences half-possessed. One is a silence test, which asks whether a crowd was free to withhold its approval, because a roar measures nothing if the alternative was prevented or punished. The other is a footprint audit, which asks whether an enthusiasm leaves the residue a genuine crowd cannot help leaving, because a count that cannot produce its own constituents is a counterfeit. A reader who has watched the trick performed in four costumes across twenty centuries stops being surprised by the fifth.
