He was a friend of the author, and he was proud. At the counter of a Mormon bookstore he mentioned the stake president, and a week later the Goosebumps display was gone and the owner was cold. No committee met. No order came down. The store's best-selling line, the one the owner said was keeping the store alive, vanished because one man wanted the feeling that errand gave him.
The Censor Keeps a Copy takes that afternoon apart and names the machinery inside it: the forensic high of a won case, conscience money paid in two paperbacks, the borrowed committee whose larger name did the seizing. Then it follows the same instruments through four centuries of the record: Plato's nursery and Aristotle's answer, the Parliament that abolished Christmas, Comstock's Chamber of Horrors, the locked shelves of the Enfer, the Lord Chamberlain's blue pencil at two guineas a play, the boys of Florence carrying mirrors to the bonfire, the doctor who read the comics, the Filthy Fifteen, and the school-board form with its blank line asking whether the challenger examined the material in its entirety.
The finding underneath is structural. To rule on a book you must read the book, so every regime of taking builds a library of what it forbids and licenses one class of reader to use it. The censor keeps a copy. The exemption cannot be designed out, and it corrupts everyone it touches: the vice agent counting his suicides, the gentlest lady who ever cut a bawdy line, the machine that now rates everything and reads nothing.
Built on a verification register of 192 logged sources, with a glossary, an index, and questions for discussion, this is the field guide for anyone who has watched a shelf go empty at a school, a library, or a store, and wanted the whole pattern named.
The pleasure of taking is the product. The removal is the receipt.
