The laboratory now contained vacuum equipment, oscilloscopes, RF instrumentation, magnetometers, balances, Dewars, cameras, data loggers, power supplies, test stands, metal samples and several devices Anya had labeled:

The Wizard preferred:
INTERESTING.
They compromised by leaving both labels.
Book One had investigated reports.
Book Two had followed the residue.
Book Three would do something more dangerous.
BUILD THE CLAIM.
If an inventor said a resonant cavity created thrust-
put it on a balance.
If someone claimed a torsion field-
construct the detector.
If a device changed inertia-
measure mass and acceleration independently.
If an engine claimed to push on the quantum vacuum-
remove everything else it might accidentally push against.
If an experiment claimed spacetime distortion-
bring clocks.
If it claimed energy from nowhere-
bring accountants.
Anya wrote underneath:
ESPECIALLY ENERGY ACCOUNTANTS. The Wizard had discovered a problem with extraordinary machines.
The closer their claimed force approached zero-
the larger the list of things capable of impersonating it became.
A cable.
A thermal gradient.
A magnetic field.
A pump.
A shifting center of gravity.
Outgassing.
Electrostatic attraction.
Mechanical creep.
Radiation pressure.
RF leakage.
Vibration.
A human leaning against the wrong table.
Anya called these:
THE ORDINARY CONSPIRACY.
No one needed to fake the result.
The apparatus could manufacture its own miracle.
Book Three would therefore operate under a stricter law:
THE SMALLER THE EFFECT,
THE BETTER THE CONTROL MUST BECOME.
And that led directly to a copper cone sitting alone inside a vacuum chamber.
No exhaust pipe.
No propellant tank.
No moving mass.
Only microwaves bouncing inside a cavity.
The Wizard looked at it.
What does it push against?
Anya replied:

The Wizard preferred:
