Recollections of the Gilliss Press and Its Work During Fifty Years, 1869-1919 is a personal and professional chronicle of one of the most distinguished printing establishments in American history. Written by Walter Gilliss, this work offers a detailed retrospective of a half-century dedicated to the art and craft of fine bookmaking. The narrative traces the development of the Gilliss Press from its inception, illustrating the rise of high-quality typography and meticulous presswork during a period of significant growth in the American publishing industry.
The text provides unique insights into the collaborative nature of the trade, detailing the press's long-standing relationship with bibliophile organizations and its commitment to aesthetic excellence. Gilliss reflects on the technical evolutions and artistic decisions that shaped the firm's output, providing a valuable firsthand perspective on the standards of craftsmanship that defined the era. For scholars of the graphic arts and collectors of fine editions, Recollections of the Gilliss Press and Its Work During Fifty Years, 1869-1919 remains an essential record of the dedication required to produce books of lasting beauty and historical significance.
