This dissertation explores the role of aesthetic experiences and perceptions of everyday activities from an educator's point of view. This area is neglected by the traditional, modernist fine art-centered aesthetic education, and has not yet received full attention by the postmodern aesthetic education that largely focuses on visual literacy. From among numerous daily actions, events, and activities, this study chose some people's relationship with their daily clothing as its research subject. The reason for this choice is because clothing is by social standard an unavoidable daily commodity. The goal of the study is to illuminate to some empirical degree how the formal properties (including appearance and texture) or the style of the clothing relate to the emotional and sensual responses of individuals, and to understand how these individuals assess the personal, social, and cultural significances of the clothing style. As a part of the effort to re-frame the concepts of aesthetic education, this study conducts an exploratory, interpretive research focusing on the role of aesthetic experiences and perceptions in daily life in the form of case studies. Using an emerging thesis called everyday aesthetics as its theoretical base, the study interviewed and observed four New York City residents who are enthusiastic about Chinese style clothing and wear such clothing on a daily basis. The result shows that in the process of daily life, aesthetic experience and perception usually occurred in a casual and subtle manner. However, since the research participants' inclination toward Chinese-style clothing was formed throughout the time, the formation was a lively process that involves various life experiences. The experiences encompass social, cultural, practical, and aesthetic dimensions. Thus, the everyday aesthetic experience and perception are valuable for their cumulative power that brings deep-seated influence to human life on different levels. Recognizing traditional aesthetic education's neglect of everyday life content and visual/material cultural study's neglect of aesthetic experiences, this study's goal is to make a case that, within the tradition of American visual art education, everyday life is worthy of aesthetic education' s attention in terms of its aesthetic value.
