Three Pro Bowls. Super Bowl champion. Voted Baltimore's most charitable person. One of the most respected players in the NFL.
And then February 15, 2014.
At approximately 2:55 in the morning, Ray Rice and his fiancée Janay Palmer entered an elevator at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The elevator had a surveillance camera. What happened inside was recorded.
A first video, released February 19, showed Rice dragging an unconscious Palmer from the elevator. On July 24, 2014, the NFL suspended Ray Rice for two games. Two games. Less than half the suspension that applied to a positive marijuana test.
The two-game suspension became a national scandal. Roger Goodell was forced to admit I didn't get it right. The NFL announced a new domestic violence policy.
And then, on September 8, 2014, TMZ published the second video.
The Punch tells the complete story:
Ray Rice - His father was killed in a drive-by shooting when Ray was one year old. His cousin was killed by a drunk driver when Ray was ten. He led New Rochelle High School to a state championship. He set Rutgers records and became a first-team All-American. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 and became one of the best running backs in the AFC: 1,339 rushing yards, 702 receiving yards, three Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl championship. He was voted Baltimore's most charitable person in 2012. He was all of this, and also the person who punched Janay Palmer in an elevator.
The Elevator - The mutual assault framing that both of them were initially charged with. The first video showing Rice dragging Palmer from the elevator. The indictment. The marriage the day after the indictment. The press conference at which Janay Rice said she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident - which the Ravens live-tweeted.
The League's Response - Two games. Less than a marijuana suspension. Ozzie Newsome calling the punishment significant and fair. Goodell defending it. Then, thirty-five days after the suspension announcement, Goodell admitting he didn't get it right.
The Second Video - September 8, 2014. The footage from inside the elevator: a single punch, a woman falling, unconscious. Hours later: the Ravens terminate Rice's contract. The NFL suspends him indefinitely. Goodell says the NFL never saw the video. The AP reports that a law enforcement official sent the tape to an NFL office in April. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller investigates and finds no evidence that senior NFL officials had seen it, but concludes the league was negligent in failing to obtain it.
The Aftermath - Rice appeals his indefinite suspension. Former federal judge Barbara Jones overturns it: Rice had not lied to the NFL, and the indefinite suspension constituted double jeopardy for conduct for which he had already been disciplined. He is reinstated. No NFL team ever signs him. He retires in 2018.
The punch was wrong. The two-game suspension was wrong. The institutional response - the press conference, the failure to obtain the video, the indefinite suspension that constituted double jeopardy - was wrong in different ways. The Punch is the complete account of all of it.
