Introduction to Biochemistry
Biochemistry has been around for about 400 years. Although the term biochemistry appears to have been used for the first time in 1882, it is generally acknowledged that German chemist Carl Neuberg proposed the term for the first time in 1903. The study of chemical reactions in living things is known as biochemistry. All living processes and organisms are governed by biochemistry. Biochemical processes are responsible for the incredible complexity of life by controlling the flow of information through biochemical signaling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism. The structures and functions of cellular components like proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules are the focus of much of biochemistry, although the field is increasingly focusing on processes rather than individual molecules. Biochemistry has become so good at explaining living processes over the past 40 years that almost all life sciences, from botany to medicine, are now doing biochemical research.
