Desde o início da história da humanidade somos desafiados, e desde Adão e Eva descobrimos o preço de sairmos do caminho sugerido por Deus. Com nossos primeiros pais tudo era bom, já que havia sido criado por Deus como vemos no Gênesis. Mas com a redenção por Jesus Cristo encontramos um lugar ainda melhor, onde podemos ir se tivermos esperando com devoção e agindo de acordo.
Ocorre que o progresso científico e tecnológico, que vivenciamos a partir do final do século XX até os dias atuais, fez com que a grande maioria da humanidade acreditasse que era possível alcançar tudo de bom neste mundo com conhecimento suficiente e recursos para gastar neste sentido.
De fato, tivemos um progresso inimaginável na técnica e na ciência nos últimos cinquenta anos. As pessoas acreditavam que na nossa época teríamos a cura para todo tipo de doença, teletransporte, comida impressa (de qualidade) e o domínio completo sobre a natureza. Quem era fã de Star Trek deve lembrar da famosa frase:
Espaço, a fronteira final. Estas são as viagens da Nave Estelar Enterprise, em sua missão para exploração de novos mundos, buscar novas vidas e civilizações, indo aonde nenhum homem jamais esteve.
Em termos práticos, a proposta é vamos juntar um grupo de pessoas com alto grau de curiosidade, dispostas a largar suas famílias (ou levá-las para o espaço), a arriscarem suas vidas e passarem toda a sua existência vagando por aí, buscando o conhecimento. Esta era a esperança delas, buscar o conhecimento.
Agora compare esta motivação com o descrito por Pero Vaz de Caminha na primeira chegada de Portugal ao Brasil, na esquadra liderada por Pedro Álvares Cabral:
