Cristiano, cuál es tu esperanza? Rezar para ganar la lotería? Trabajar duro para crear y mantener a su familia? Esperando que las autoridades públicas resuelvan todos sus problemas? Escapar de las grandes ciudades y vivir en el campo? Construir un refugio subterráneo y esperar la destrucción de la humanidad? Si alguna de estas es tu esperanza, puedes quedarte quieto, porque tu esperanza es vana y sin sentido.
Le explico. O mejor dicho, dejaré que la Palabra de Dios explique vuestra falta de esperanza. Cuán feliz es aquel cuyo socorro es el Dios de Jacob, cuya esperanza está en Jehová, en su Dios, Salmo 145 (146), 5. Estás poniendo tu esperanza en las cosas de este mundo, como el dinero, tu esfuerzo individual, el progreso material, científico y tecnológico de la humanidad. Son regalos de Dios para nosotros, pero perecen cuando la polilla los consume y el ladrón los roba, y no traen verdadera esperanza.
Aprende de los santos de la Iglesia, quienes han acumulado tesoros en el cielo y están allí en eterna felicidad y unión con Dios. Simplemente siguieron el Modelo Divino de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Verdad Eterna, Camino de Salvación y Vida Plena. Por supuesto, cada uno de los santos tenía una forma de vida diferente, eran casados o célibes, vivían en la pobreza o eran reyes de grandes naciones; lo único que tenían que hacer era vivir bien el Evangelio, con sencillez y fidelidad, desafiando las persecuciones, las tentaciones y las concupiscencias que todos tenemos que afrontar.
Desde el comienzo de la historia humana hemos sido desafiados, y desde Adán y Eva hemos descubierto el precio de abandonar el camino sugerido por Dios. Con nuestros primeros padres todo estaba bien, ya que habían sido creados por Dios como vemos en el Génesis. Pero con la redención por Jesucristo encontramos un lugar aún mejor, al que podemos ir si hemos esperado con devoción y actuado en consecuencia.
No obstante, el progreso científico y tecnológico, que hemos experimentado desde finales del siglo XX hasta nuestros días, ha hecho creer a la gran mayoría de la humanidad que es posible lograr todo lo bueno en este mundo con conocimientos y recursos suficientes para gastar en este sentido.
De hecho, hemos logrado avances inimaginables en técnica y ciencia en los últimos cincuenta años. La gente creía que en nuestro tiempo tendríamos curas para todo tipo de enfermedades, teletransportación, (buena) comida impresa y un dominio total sobre la naturaleza. Cualquiera que haya sido fanático de Star Trek debe recordar la famosa frase:
El espacio, la última frontera. Estos son los viajes de Starship Enterprise, en su misión de explorar nuevos mundos, buscar nuevas vidas y civilizaciones, yendo a donde ningún hombre ha ido antes.
En términos prácticos, la propuesta es: juntemos a un grupo de personas con un alto grado de curiosidad, dispuestas a dejar atrás a sus familias (o llevarlas al espacio), arriesgar sus vidas y pasar toda su existencia deambulando en busca de conocimiento. Ésta era su esperanza: buscar conocimiento.
Compárese ahora esta motivación con la descrita por Pero Vaz de Caminha en la primera llegada de Portugal a Brasil, en la escuadra dirigida por Pedro Álvares Cabral:
Sin embargo, me parece que el mejor resultado que se puede obtener es salvar a estas personas. Y ésta debe ser la semilla principal que Vuestra Alteza debe sembrar en él. Cuánto más voluntad de cumplirlo y hacer lo que Vuestra Alteza desea, es decir, aumentar nuestra fe!
