Healthcare organizations have been facing a nursing shortage for quite some time, and the shortage is not expected to end anytime soon. The nursing shortage also has an impact on nurse retention. There have been numerous studies that focused on employee turnover, with fewer studies addressing employee retention. Although there have been many turnover and retention studies for nurses, few have focused on nurse retention with federal medical facilities such as those with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to identify the factors that contributed to the nurses' decision to remain employed with their present organization. Interviews were conducted with nurses to identify the factors contributing to their decision to stay with their present organization. Appreciative inquiry principles were used to develop the interview questions to identify the positive aspects of the nurse's job. Appreciative inquiry provides the opportunity for individuals to identify the factors that give life to an organization or work group to continue to build upon the strengths. Themes from the interviews were compared with results from the All Employee Survey to provide confirmatory support. Many of the findings were consistent with previous studies; however, there were findings that are unique to VA medical facilities. The results of this study can help the organization review and revise retention strategies as needed to ensure there are enough nurses to care for the patients.
