From 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., a night-shift nurse watches over the patients, families, medications, machines, and quiet warning signs most people never see. An arterial line suddenly goes flat. An insulin record does not match the patient in the bed. A familiar emergency-room visitor looks different this time. A laboring mother delivers before the full team arrives. A dying woman waits for dawn while her daughter drives through the night.
Through twenty-five composite stories, The Night Nurse enters intensive care units, medical-surgical floors, emergency bays, psychiatric wards, oncology rooms, hospice care, labor and delivery, skilled nursing, and the lonely recovery room after midnight.
These are not stories about flawless heroes. The nurse at their center becomes tired, impatient, frightened, and occasionally wrong. She silences an alarm too quickly. She makes assumptions about a patient she has seen before. She questions whether compassion and procedure always lead to the same decision.
Then she looks again.
Written with clinical authenticity and emotional restraint, David Berg, MD shifts the focus from diagnosis to the people who remain at the bedside after the crisis. The patient may recover or die, but the nurse still has medications to administer, pumps to check, families to call, bodies to care for, and four other rooms waiting.
Some nights end with a life saved. Others end with an empty bed, a sealed belongings envelope, or nothing happening at all.
By morning, the hallways are clean and the day staff are arriving.
