Kevin Hughes' first work of nonfiction-Making Music with the Shakers-chronicles his experience as a member of Albuquerque's most popular New Wave rock band, active in the early 1980s. His colorful narrative explores the life of a working musician; the creative process for writing, learning, and playing songs; the joys and pitfalls of this lifestyle; and the often-humorous episodes that occurred as the band toured New Mexico nightclubs and roadhouses. The book closes with biographies of the five band members and provides links to live Shakers performance videos, as well as recordings of songs Kevin composed for the quintet.
