The narrator shares life with Lola, a clever and surprisingly expressive Shihpoo with blonde wavy hair and soulful brown eyes. Lola isn't just smart-she's almost human. She opens doors, hides her toys, gives attitude, and can charm just about anyone. But recently, she's been doing something even more astonishing: trying to talk.
At first, her attempts are subtle-huffy grumbles and near-words at the door or treat jar. Then one day Lola says out, followed by words like please, now, and even, to the narrator's shock, slow down while they're driving. That warning ends up saving them from a close collision, convincing the narrator that Lola is a truly exceptional dog.
The story grows even more magical when the narrator finds an old photo of Lola's mother, who looks like a flying superhero. Jokingly, the narrator asks Lola if she wants to fly. But Lola responds-she wants to try, and she even seems to know where her mother learned her skill.
Guided by Lola, they drive into the mountains. Along the way, Lola reveals more of her abilities-using words, giving directions, and even digging up a mysterious tin box she insists should stay closed. At a dramatic cliffside, they encounter giant white hawks. Lola, with their guidance, takes her first flight, gliding alongside the birds in a way that is at once miraculous and moving.
After this adventure, Lola returns changed but still the loyal friend she's always been. She gains increasing independence, meets other extraordinary dogs, and takes her role as a leader among them-eventually acquiring a superhero cape of her own. Throughout, her bond with the narrator deepens, blending the wonders of magic with the warmth of everyday friendship.
