This book was written from the heart - from years of pain, confusion, misdiagnosis, and ultimately, discovery. My intention is to empower those who are suffering, to educate those who care for them, and to advocate for systemic change in how Bertolotti Syndrome is recognised and treated in Australia and beyond. Please use this book as a starting point for your own conversations with medical professionals - not as an endpoint.
This is my story. It is raw, honest, and at times difficult to read, but it is also a story of resilience, fight, and survival. For more than fifty years I lived with pain that doctors dismissed, minimised, and misunderstood. I was labelled a whiner, told to rest, told to give up my career, told it was all in my head.
It was not in my head.
I have Bertolotti Syndrome, a congenital spinal abnormality that affects a rare percentage of those who carry it. I also have a sacralised L6, congenital cervical stenosis, and multiple secondary conditions that developed over decades of mismanagement and missed diagnoses.
