Nancy Callahan, a top computer technician, and young mother, received a job offer from General Ted Daniels for her computer expertise. He wanted her to head to Star Base Two Forty-seven, Relay Station Three Twelve, and two starships, the UEA Arachne and the UEA Maia. She would upgrade the computer system and eradicate the same computer systems of an unknown virus. Nancy wasn't looking forward to her time aboard the Maia but accepted the job. She reminded General Daniels that since she would be gone for several weeks, her three-year-old daughter Hope would go along, and part of her fee would include child care. The night before she was to leave the UEA Maia and return to the Arachne and Earth, she found her daughter missing and not even aboard the Maia. Will Nancy ever see her daughter again? How did she get off the ship? Is she even still alive?
