This book provides an insight into the pioneering work of mediation and dispute resolution with cognitively impaired people. It explores questions of feasibility and justification, and establishes a link between theoretical approaches and mediation practice. Based on mediation experiences, it examines whether and in what form mediation is suitable as a conflict resolution tool with cognitively impaired people. It also presents a model of dispute resolution in which people with cognitive impairments are trained as mediators and professionals become their assistants. This is based on the motto 'those who can argue can also mediate'. The second part of the book highlights milestones in mediation and dispute resolution work from 2005 to the present day. Aspects of mediation are placed in relation to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and current action plans. The diverse practical experiences of mediation, dispute resolution, specialist conferences and training of dispute resolution teams are incorporated and confirm today's mediation practice based on empowerment and participation.
