Chapter 1: Lorguilk Redbone and the Ember Vault
Lorguilk's boots struck stone as he descended into the depths. The air thickened with sulfur and silence, the tunnels narrowing with each step. His war axe, Cinderbite, rested heavy on his back, its runes thrumming with unseen power.
The flickering sigils along the walls pulsed-warnings etched by forgotten hands. Their glow revealed twisted figures, bodies frozen in torment, hands reaching for salvation that never came.
They had touched the Heartbrand.
It lay ahead, pulsing, alive. Its flame flickered, daring another to claim it. Lorguilk stepped forward, his fingers brushing the hilt.
The fire surged.
Pain coiled up his arm, but he did not falter. He whispered the ancient rites, his grip tightening.
The blade did not consume him.
The Heartbrand had chosen.
Heat lingered on his fingertips as he lifted the blade, its flames now steady, responding to his grip with an eerie sentience. A slow breath escaped his lips, the echoes of his ancestors stirring in the chamber's stale air. The vault had been a tomb for the unworthy, but for him, it was merely a test.
