Young Muchle Mugli leads an ordinary life in the capital city of Muchlehausen and dreams of one day becoming a great Spore Mage. When he accepts a simple assignment to spy on several suspicious Löwinär supply caravans, he believes that only a few days of work lie ahead.
However, in the southern reaches of the Mushroom Forest, he encounters the first signs of a much larger conflict. Together with the Stormforge Dwarf Brokk Ironstride, he follows the caravans to the ruins in the forest's dried and desolate region, now occupied by the Machles and the Löwinär. There, the two discover how their enemies are strengthening their positions and preparing for war against the Muchles.
As Mugli takes his first steps as a Spore Mage and learns new spells, he and Brokk become increasingly entangled in the dangers of the civil war. To protect their homeland, they must sabotage supply lines, infiltrate enemy camps, and face their first real battles.
In the end, they manage to secure a small victory for the Muchles by stopping several important Löwinär supply caravans. Yet it soon becomes clear that they have only scratched the surface of a far greater conflict. The fortresses of the Löwinär still stand, the Machles continue to gather their forces, and the war for the Mushroom Forest of Muchle has only just begun.
