Obedience to God in principle is not the same thing as unquestioning loyalty to men. Across Minhou County in 1935-1936, twelve historical parables follow the imagined lives of farmers, water-carriers, ferrymen, teachers, craftsmen, and believers as they encounter the friction between natural independence and the Headship of Christ. Authority, responsibility, submission, unfairness, opinion, personal rights, and wounded pride become testing grounds. Some resist because they refuse to yield. Others submit outwardly while inwardly preserving judgment, resentment, or self-rule. Still others discover that obedience to Christ may require humility without surrendering conscience. These stories ask whether Christian service can remain truly under the Head while the self insists upon being its own final court of appeal. Position may confer responsibility, but it cannot manufacture spiritual authority. Submission is not servility. Obedience is not the extinction of conscience. And independence, however principled it may appear, is not the same thing as spiritual maturity. Again and again, the deeper issue is exposed: whether the believer is living under the government of Christ or merely reacting to human authority from the strength of the natural life. There is one Head. The question is whether our service, judgment, and obedience are actually under Him. The Law of the Head is Volume Six of The House-to-House Chronicles: Parables of the Little Flock.
