The Word of God does more than distinguish right from wrong. It divides between sources that can look almost identical from the outside.
Along the Yangtze in 1930-1931, twelve historical parables follow the imagined lives of schoolteachers, midwives, merchants, craftsmen, and believers confronting the hidden mixture of soul and spirit. Zeal may be genuine and still arise from reputation. Sympathy may feel loving and still resist obedience. Information may be correct without becoming revelation.
These are not stories about obvious hypocrisy. They enter the more difficult territory where sincerity, intelligence, emotion, prudence, and good intention can all appear spiritual while proceeding from the natural life. A person may do the right thing, say the right words, and even desire the right outcome while the source remains untouched.
Again and again, the Word becomes the blade that exposes what human judgment cannot easily detect: natural energy masquerading as service, anxiety presenting itself as responsibility, sentiment resisting obedience, knowledge substituting for revelation, and self-conscious zeal attempting to perform the spirit's function.
The question therefore moves beyond, Was this right? to something far more searching:
What in me did it?
Because what appears spiritual is not always spiritual in source.
The Divide of the Sword is Volume Four of The House-to-House Chronicles: Parables of the Little Flock.
