The old laboratory got into you. Sometimes literally.
For generations, dental technicians learned through materials: wax, plaster, investment, metal, porcelain, fire and repetition. The work was physical, exacting and largely invisible. Then the scanner arrived.
The Last of the Technicians is a memoir-led account of a profession changing faster than its own definition.
Drawing on more than twenty years around dentistry and dental technology-including approximately sixteen years as a dental technician-A.N. Mercer traces the journey from the analogue laboratory to a world of digital capture, CAD, remote design, centralised manufacturing, automation and machine-generated first drafts.
This is not a technical manual or a nostalgic argument for bringing every old process back. Many of those processes were hazardous, repetitive and rightly replaced.
The deeper question is what they were teaching.
Waxing developed anatomy, proportion and restraint. Model and die work taught that every later stage inherits the quality of its foundation. Casting made consequence unavoidable. Porcelain demanded anticipation: the technician had to build for the result that would emerge after the fire.
As those tasks disappear, where will the understanding they once developed come from?
The book explores:
- how traditional dental technology education formed the technician through the hand;
- why education has struggled to keep pace with the profession it serves;
- the decline in registered technicians and the narrowing of training routes;
- the rise of laboratory groups, remote design and central manufacturing;
- how craftsmanship moved from visible handwork into less visible digital decisions;
- what happens when one complete case is divided between multiple people, platforms and locations;
- which skills may be disappearing before their true value has been understood;
- how automation changes authorship when the machine produces the first draft;
- why the laboratory was not only a workplace, but also the profession's school;
- and why the title dental technician no longer contains every person performing the profession's work.
This is not an obituary.
The technicians emerging now are designers, educators, material specialists, production experts, troubleshooters, integrators, product developers and innovators. Some are entering the profession for the first time. Others have spent entire careers repeatedly reinventing themselves.
The tools have changed. The responsibility has not.
The Last of the Technicians asks what must be preserved from the profession's past-and offers a new definition broad enough to carry dental technology into its future.
